You know what, I'm actually in the exact same position you are. I always thought, "Oh I'm 20 years old now, I'll never be able to be as good a piano player as I would have been if I had started when I was five!" But same as you, I didn't have money for lessons, though I have always had some sort of keyboard around so I basically taught myself. I played the trumpet at school where I learned to read sheet music so every chance I got I'd go buy some sheet music when I was like 14/15 and when I got a decent keyboard I really started to practice practice practice. That's all it is. Some people, yes, are born with this natural talent that gets nurtured at a young age, but that doesn't mean you can't develop your skill and be just as good. My advice, go for it. I'm 20 and I'm still learning. You're never too old. And don't be shy about asking for help because of your age, sure you might end up in a beginners class with people younger than you but pay them no mind. You do it for you...
Good luck!

Depends. Are you going to become a professional pianist or are you taking it up as a hobby? I picked up the guitar when I was 17 and I still play as a hobby. I taught myself where the notes are on the piano when I was 15 and I can still play that. No clue how to use proper fingering, but it's just something I know and goof around with for fun.
So if you're thinking of becoming a professional, it'll be very difficult for you at your age now, but not impossible. As a hobby, it's never too late to learn.

No, of course not, it's never too late to learn a new skill. It's true that you may have had an advantage if you had started at an earlier age but you can still learn now. Think about all the great composers. Many of them wrote their most famous works much much later in their careers, when they were older. Go for it, what have you got to lose?

18 is not very old to start anything. My friend started piano at 31 and now, at 35, she rocks. I took trumpet at 25 and when I'm 80 maybe I'll dabble in the cello. It's never too late. The only thing is now you won't have mom getting on your case to practice, so you have to be self disciplined. Good luck.

I'm no expert but speaking in a general sense, the later you leave things in life the longer they take to learn.
18 isn't that old really, I'm sure there are much older people who decided to take up playing the piano later in life than you and found it out. As long as you have patience it should be ok.

As long as you have the desire and the talent it is not too late. You may even have an advantage as you are dedicated to practice. A word of advice: "crawl before you fly" - in other words, don't try to go to fast - getting your right hand to ignore what your left hand is doing takes time, patience, and practice. Go very slowly at first, and work up your speed later. Good luck!
