While the the norm being it was not historical correct (the whipping of a soldier for example) one can realize the need for artistic liberties. This movie was about courage, freedom, and the necessity of standing up against racism in all its invidious forms. It reflects on religion for any man or race but in particular when faced with danger looking for and finding courage. One by one the men rise to express their prayers, their hopes, and their love for what to some of them is the only family they have ever known. It reflects on the true nature of men their God and their fellow man. Happy Holidays. God Bless You and Our Southern People.

Heroes come in all sizes, shapes, religions, creeds and colours.
'Glory' was an excellent movie. I think Zwick did his nation a favour and made a fine film about the 54th Masschusetts Infantry, from its inception to its assault on the Confederate positions at Battery Wagner, and the death of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. Surely the first reason the film was made was to tell the story of 54th Mass. Sure, there are other themes, but I'll let others answer that instead.

Duty/Honor- that of white upper class to serve, that of disenfranchised blacks to serve
Justice/Injustice - black soldiers serving bravely despite receiving lower wages, poorer accommodations from the army, officers
The Horror and Destruction war brings - the south was decimated by the battles, industry nationwide was set back in may ways, families were torn apart, brothers fought on both sides of the war.
