Of course not. Your marriage is a legal contract between your wife and you, in any country. They can promote ill will between the two of you, if you haven't established that you two love each other, and took your vows seriously...i.e. forsaking all others. The Bible stresses that a man is to leave his family and be with his wife (man being person, not just men!). If you have fears, you need to discuss this with your wife, perhaps in a counseling session, to see where she stands on this issue. Is she torn between parents and you? Then she wasn't emotionally ready for marriage. Does she side with you, and resent her parents interference? If so, you have no fears except by focusing on this situation, it becomes bigger. Mom and Dad have their marriage, you and wife have yours. End of discussion. Success!

Some countries do not recognise marriage or divorce overseas.

That could mean that as far as Canada is concerned... you are not legally married.

You need to check on Canada's law about marriage.

Apart from that... families cannot issue divorces. But they can report you to the authorities if your wife is not of legal age. Someone under the legal age needs the permission of their parents to get married.

They cannot issue a divorce, but they can enforce an annulment, especially if your wife is under age. If you're both over the ages of 21 or 25, they cannot enforce an annulment, whether they like you or not. The courts would acknowledge you as adults, and there is nothing your in-laws could do, legally. Granted, you might not be allowed in their home, but that's ok. Keep treating their daughter like the queen she is, and you make her happy and keep a smile on her face. Good luck.

No they are not allowed to issue a divorce by themselves. The only way to divorce now is if you and/or your wife file for the divorce in a court of law.

Not unless they are the courts. I'm not an expert on Canadian law, but intuition tells me they are screwed and they will just have to "deal with it".

you would have to look it up in Canadian legal documents, but unless she is unstable or underage. I don't think they can do anything about it, maybe contest it and try to prove you harm her in any such manor, but then again, like I said they would have to have some pretty heavy reasons and evidence
