>> 6. New York Giants (7-8) – Win the tiebreaker for the final wild-card spot based on a better strength of victory (45-58) than the Packers (33-71). Giants and Packers have better conference record (6-5) than Panthers (5-6), Rams (5-6) and Falcons (5-6).<<

From that, my guess is this:

1. The Panthers need to beat New Orleans to finish 8-8.
2. The Giants and Packers both have to tie or lose (to finish 7-8-1 or 7-9).
3. The Panthers have the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Rams.
4. The Panthers are 1-1 with the Falcons, but have a better record within their division.

They have a shot - the Bears won't roll over against the "hated" Packers, especially not in Chicago. Likewise, Washington would like to ruin the playoff chances of division rival New York. However, New Orleans needs to win to ensure a first-round bye, so they're going to be playing hard.

Of course, it wouldn't have come down to this had the Panthers not gagged in the fourth quarter of so many games.

Every other football team in the world has to lose the rest of their games, and the Panthers have to win theirs.
