Probably because they have no idea how many gay people they already know who are State representatives, teachers, pharmacists, cops, bank tellers, loan officers, and many other positions of responsibility in their communities.
In the absence of knowledge, they ".... don't know what to think! ".
If you were someone basically without any knowledge of this group of people except that their sexuality differed from your own in ways that made you feel ill-at-ease, ...well, can you see where all sorts of imaginary nonsense rushes in to fill the gap?

I honestly think that they don't have enough to do in their own lives so start analyzing other people. Sometimes too they are feeling guilty about something secretly going on in their lives (affairs, stealing, etc.) and to escape from those self-incriminating thoughts, they pick out a minority group like gays to obsess about. People who wastes their time on gay bashing and the like usually have something in their own background they want kept secret. When they talk about other people, the limelight is taken off of them. I've seen people repeatedly do this type of thing.

B/c the gay people are going to take over the world. I've heard from my sources over in NASA that the gay people have created a new lazor gun that will change everyone's sexual preference into that of homosexuality. They've tested it on animals, and thusly we've noticed that the penguin is indeed turning gay and now its time for the world to be taken over. So zip it up and watch ur back, the gays are on the loose once again.

People always have to impose their beliefs on others. Why do you think we can't get married? It's because all the religious nuts out there feel it's okay to deny people of their happiness.

i dont know but its ridiculous. i wonder the same thing about why people care so much if you are a vegetarian or vegan. cant they just keep their thoughts to themselves? we're happy as we are, they need to get over that.

they are too afraid and ashamed to look in the mirror and judge themselves, so instead, they take out their insecurities on others.
they also do it because society seems to tolerate this type of abuse and discrimination. but things are starting to change, thank goodness!
