When a child is good, Santa Claus leaves toys and presents in their stocking. If a child has been naughty, then santa leaves a lump of coal in their stocking. I really don't know where the idea of the coal originated, but this is what I have been told. Merry Christmas!

It means a piece of coal or a chunk of coal. If its for a Christmas present, you were naughty ( BAD),if its for a fire-you will need a lot more.
