You havent told us anything about the kind of firewall you are behind.. so I am using the example of a Generic router (its the black box that u use for brodband access and wireless laptops) firewall

This thing is about a feature called uPnP which expands to Universal Pug and Play.It is kinda like putting a pawprint sensitive doggy flap on your firewall. Yahoo messenger will be able to request the ports to be opened when it needs it and it'll close once yahoo messenger closes. This is a nifty feature that most branded routers have. The steps are
1) double click your connections icon( The blinking pic of 2 computers on the bottom right corner of screen)
2) click on support and copy down the thing against gateway (typically someehing like 192.xxx.xxx.xxx) This is your gateway
3) type http://xxx.xxx.xxxx.xxxx which is The gateway address
4) this will take you to an admin screen of the router( hopefully)
5) click 'Admin' or Firewall' and select UPnP and click enable
6) Restart the router
That should do it.If you have a software firewall issue then tell me the s/w name and i'll be able to help u better

If you only allow the Yahoo site as a trusted site, nothing "bad" is going to get through. The thing is, that means your firewall is only allowing Active X controls and such from Yahoo, not any other site. Your firewall is fine, just stay away from sites like gaming or porn sites and you shouldn't get any nasties on your computer.

can either set norton to allow chat thru the exceptions
or advanced rules

can also check your messenger options (connection if i'm thinking right)
to set to no proxy or firewall

If, after you click to allow the site, you are warned that something harmful can get through - you are being notified that you should be very sure you want to allow that site before giving it clearance.

When you boil it down, it is your choice to make. Either allow it, or not. Just be sure you have a good antivirus program and run it frequently. If you chat a lot, you could set your PC (through the Task Scheduler) to run a full scan when you are finished for the day. Suggest you turn your monitor off -- no need to burn it out while you are not using it.

If you have WindowsXP - click this link for a tutorial.
