People, motorcycle timing is NON-ADJUSTABLE... I've seen this a number of times in here. It Can be adjusted, by putting the cams in incorrectly, but if the bike ran before, and the cams haven't been removed, then the timing is right.

What's most likely needed is some genenral maintenance. Drain the float bowls and look for water in the fuel. replace the fuel in the tank if it's older than a month. Replace the spark plugs. Check the valve adjustment, and set as needed.. and finally, if the carbs have sat with fuel in them for more than a month (without running), they will likely need to be cleaned. All of this can be done in a day by the average shadetree wrench.

Have you checked the timing? If it is hard to start, back fires through the carbs etc. there most likely a timing problem. I could be simple or it could be the timing chain or gears have jumped a tooth.

Since many motorcycles have magnetos, not distributors, the E-gap could be set wrong as well...there has to be some sort of timing between the valves opening and closing and the spark firing at the proper moment of crankshaft rotation. I still believe you have an ignition problem...

Brian M is dead wrong the timing on a bike is adjustable at least it is on Harley's Triumphs and most of the Jap bikes I have worked on over the years Sounds like the timing or valve settings are off One other problem Could be bad diaphragms if it has a CV Carb

Was it O K up till now?? Is it "Spitting" back through the carbs,
or firing through the carbs. It could be a weak mixture. (Clean the carbs for dirt and water) The ignition could be too far retarded. Are the leads on correctly?? Are the carbs full of fuel??

You could try to put some cough linctus in the tank, such as Buttercup Syrup or even a good slug of Lemsip. Havn't tried it myself yet but it may help...Good luck!
