You deal out seven cards to each player, put the rest in a pile and turn over the top card, making a new pile. The first player can either pick that card, or the top of the other pile, they then lay any card, you can lay singles, pairs runs etc. Next player can then pick whole pile , top card or one off upside down pile. Aim of the game is to left with a total of 7 or less in your hand, when the first player to do this declares the total in everyone elses hand counts against them.

It is definitely one of the forms of Rummy. The rummy game where you (sometimes) say the name of the game when you win is 'Gin' or 'Gin Rummy'. The rules you are describing are kind of like Gin, but not exactly.

A reasonable set of rules are here:

however there are a great many variations.

I'm not absolutely sure but it sounds like a game I played in college named Tong or Tonk. It does remind me of rummy but
these discards were kept in 1 straight line in the middle of the players. You could pick up as many cards from the line as you
you needed. If you needed say the ace of spades and it was buried by the 3 & 9 of diamonds. You would have to pick up the 3 & 9 & ace. But, you would only discard 1 card after your pick up. You make sets, runs, singles on someone else like rummy.

The rules are similar to but not exactly the same as a game called Cravat. There any cards you can lay down, including cards matching any of your opponents, count in your score and any in your hand when one player uses up all his cards count against, the first to score 500 being the winner. Also you can pick up as many as you want from the discard pile as long as you lay down the first card as part of your score. This is probably no use to you but Cravat is a great game.

I agree with another message here. This sounds like Tonk, a variation of Rummy.

Hmmmm Mana is a fine looking note... i imagine monsters is a too elementary note i'd pick some thing extra exciting. also I wouldnt use the note magic considering there is already a card recreation called magic.
