Some people don't celebrate Christmas. They could just politely say that and not make a big deal about it. Oh well. Merry Christmas.

OMG. People are way too freakin sesative, that's why. Christmas is not only a religious holiday. It has been woven into the fabric of american culture as a holiday. Not merely becaus of the religious reasons, but because of togetherness, and tidings of joy, and kindness. Christmas is awsome. I'll always say Merry Christmas this time of year. And if you are offended by my off-color, politically incorrect expression, than you have got to get out in the world more, loosen up, and try not to find every negative thing out there in the world. Merry Christmas

Why are they offended? Because they were weaned on a sour pickle!
It is perfectly right to wish someone a Merry Christmas.
Even devout - but sensible - worshipers of other faiths accept such a response as well wishing. For example, I'm not Jewish, but would not be offended if a Jew responded with, "Happy Hanukkah" (from which festival, some believe, we get our penchant for putting lights on Christmas trees and on houses and such.)
If someone takes offense because you wish them a Merry Christmas, then you can respond with, "All right, Mister (or "Ms.") Scrooge, have it YOUR way - DON'T be Mary - Be Joseph instead!" Then laugh and walk away.
Such sour pickle people have either been brainwashed by the "liberal" media - who support the current anti-Christian movement, or they have had a bitter experience in life and, like Charles Dickens's "Scrooge" - can't stand the thought of ANYONE being happy.
It has often been said, "Misery loves company" - Just make a note of such people and try to avoid them, as they will try to make YOU unhappy too. If you are feeling very charitable - and VERY strong emotionally, befriend them and try to make them feel someone cares. But be careful - such people don't want to understand - they have a "Coward's faith in their prejudice" - or, like many apostates of any faith, they have developed a hatred of anything to do with the faith they once espoused, and may transfer that hatred to anyone who tries to befriend them in the name of that faith.
And a Merry Christmas to all, from me to you - too. But not TOO "Merry" - He who goes forth with a Fifth on the twenty-fifth may not go forth on the twenty-sixth!
Keep that in mind on the Forth of July too - "He that goes forth with a Fifth on the Forth may not go forth on the fifth!"

darn good question. I guess it's the religion thing. You know, we don't just have freedom of religion here any more,we have the freedom to push our religious beliefs on you whether or not you like it. or at least, that's what it seems like. Merry Christmas, dear. And a happy new year to you too

People get angry since they have different beliefs or religions and don't believe that Jesus is the savior. There is nothing wrong with this because they are entitled to their own beliefs. They say happy holidays because....they don't believe in Christian ideals and have different ideas of religion.

You should tell them that the phrase "Happy Holidays" is just as offensive. The word "holiday" implies holy, and there are many people that aren't religious at all. And the word "happy" could be viewed as insensitive to people who suffer from depression.
