Dell might help, so it is a good idea to report the loss to them.

But call the police. Contact other authorities.

Microsoft says:
Trace a stolen laptop's location.
If your laptop does get stolen, wouldn't it be great if the system could do the high-tech equivalent of phoning home? There are programs that will report the location of a stolen laptop. They work when the laptop connects to the Internet.
Some claim to report the laptop's exact physical location. Tracing programs include zTrace (www.ztrace.com), CyberAngel (www.sentryinc.com) and ComputracePlus (www.computrace.com).
Security experts also say that engraving your name on the computer is helpful. That will make it more difficult to fence. A thief might decide to take a pass.

Not Dell itself. But if you bought the Lojack Software option from Software Advantage then everytime it connects to the internet it pings the software advantage website. If you then report the PC stolen Software Advantage will provide the IP location to the police and hey will attempt to recover it. If they don't recover it in 30 days then Software Advantage will then pay you a $1000 or the price of your computer whichever is less.
All the PCs that Dell has on display a their mall kiosks have Lojack installed. Many laptops have been recovered which were stolen from the kiosks.

Only if they get it in for service. They hold the asset tag which uniquely identifies your PC, as well as the serial# and the MAC Address of your internet cards (Both Wireless and Hardwire).
There are some WWW watchdog agencies that will actively search for network communications from your network devices using these MAC addresses, use Google to find one. Most charge a finders fee. Good Luck.
Addendum: The idiot below that says we are blowing smoke up your *** thinks that the Lojack capability resides on your your hard drive..., worse yet, does not understand the capabilities of a network sniffer.

If you buy lojack it will do no good if they already wiped the hdd clean and reinstalled a new OS. Dell or anyone can not search for a certain mac address or asset tag. I had one stolen and dell told me there is no way of tracing it online with the asset or mac address....These people are blowing smoke up your a.. Just file a police report and hopefully it will turn up in a few months...Thanks

they actually won't be able to hint it. there is not any longer something apart from your reproduction of abode windows that must be trackable as i'm specific they do no longer shop a checklist of what customer offered what serial quantity computer. (shop checklist of fashions offered, no longer serial numbers linking to show purchasers). you will no longer see your computer returned. i'd propose figuring out to purchase a sparkling one. Do you have renters coverage? I extra it to my automobile coverage with State Farm and that's $8.33 a month AND it supplies me 10% off my entire invoice so its particularly unfastened. it covers my stuff as much as $20,000 and has a $500 deductible. so which you will have the skill to change your computer and each thing in case you had it:D stable windfall!

Without promoting any site or company, I will tell you that there are organizations on the web that can search for a particular IP address (a sort of computer ID card. Each computer has one that is unique to it.) Since most computers are used on-line, it is possible for it to be traced using its IP. Do a search, and you'll find a site that can help you.
Good Luck!

Hi there are software that can detect where it is if you did have it installed or have the satellite chip I believe.
The problem is if the person who stole it is very far away or even out of the country you will have to pay more than the notebook's price to get it back

If you buy the optional tracking package, yes. They offer one from CompuTrace.
