Being against war isn't silly -- as someone put it. Why be for war whne so many lives will be lost?
My nephew is a SSGT in the Marines and was out at Paris Island until last year until he was reassigned to Japan and now I hear he is headed for Iraq in February. Now all the training he has imparted on recruits he will have to use to make sure he survives his tour in Iraq. He just went back to Japan after being in Arizona for training.
So all we can do is support them and be there for them and their families. Don't turn away from him -- 2008 is a long way off -- he just might change his mind. I wasn't thrilled when my nephew went in either. At the time he enlisted, it made me realize that I have 5 other nephews that will reach that age of having to sing up with selective service and I don't like it one red penny.
My families military history goes back to WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War and now Iraq. All we can do is keep our service people in prayer and hope that this administration decides that lives are more important than trying to save face.

The best thing to do is support him. Let him know that you will be there in the toughest of times. Let him know that if he needs a shoulder to cry on that you'll be there for him. Let him know that the love you have for him (whether just as a friend or wanting it to be more) will always be there no matter the situation. But most of all, be his friend. This will be one of the toughest obstacles of his life, but with a true friend by his side, he will succeed and reach the top. Just because you're against war doesn't mean that you have the right to disagree with his thoughts and opinions of our country.
We are all entitled to our own opinions, just keep this in mind... Live well, Laugh Often and Love much... With all of this we will all succeed.

Being against war is silly. You will realize this as you grow up and gain more life experiences. Since your friend has made this choice, all you can do is support him with POSITIVE letters, cards, etc. Don't worry about him dying. We all are going to die. By not going to war he may get hit by a car.......by going to war he might avoid this and come back alive. You never know how life turns out.

Be proud ; supportive ; be loyal and keep in touch . Pray for him and all our troops and coalition forces . Those who have fought in wars , do so to protect our nation and the freedoms that keep you free . You like freedom but you don't like war . Who likes war ? Nobody ; but unfortunately , it is necessary , and not a popular thing . I have a hunch you would like captivity even less than you don't like war . It's incomprehensible , that those who are aware that our country was attacked on 9/11 , conveniently disengage themselves from reality , by making a statement that we all agree with -yet most are alert enough to know we don't like war on our shores even more .Our brave soldiers risk life & limb , and then have to have their moral shot down by a "privilaged " few , who love freedom & peace ...but feel it's more self-serving to make grandiose statements on how much they hate war - while their statements give aid & comfort to the enemy . It's funny how the special ones hate war but seem to care for the enemy even more than our brave troops . Don't stand by your friend , if you can't understand and support him . It's better he cut contacts who might damage his moral when he needs it most . God bless him and all those brave troops .

Have you tried to talk him out of it? By all means keep in touch with him once he joins - nothing lifts the spirits like a letter from home. Let him know he's in your thoughts - that will help. And just hope for the best - maybe he'll be one of the lucky ones that won't get sent to Iraq.

getting into the marines doesn't immediately mean going to war. just pray that he won't be assigned in iraq if ever. in other countries like South Korea, men are required to enter and serve military for two years including celebrities.

just because he is joining doesn't mean he is going to war.you must remember it is they American soldier that gives you your freedom. You should be honored to have him as your friend. Your very way of life was given to you by the WW2 generation of soldier. Honor him and thank him.
