Does deleting music off of your hard drive make your computer faster? I was just wondering since it is taking up space and the comptuer does load everrything on the hard drive when it boots up. I'm just wondering because I want to speed up my PC.

Also, does deleting pictures off of your computer speed up your PC more as well?

Thanks!

I see that there are multiple answers to your question. My answer to you is: having free disk space is the key. If you have a 100 gig drive and 50 gis of that are used by music and 49.9 gigs is used by aplications and other files, then yes, getting rid of some of the music files will give you "free" disk space. But on the other hand. If you have a game or games or pictures that you don't use frequently, or other files you can delete or burn to a CD or something, then you can get rid of that .

Deleting a game that you have already played and aren't going to play again, is probably better than, deleting music. The key is that if you have 99.9% of your hard drive filled, then it will be extremely slow. If you have say 95% filled, it still could be slow too. If you are using the music the most, keep it on the drive and try getting rid of old games and apps that you dont use.

For the second point ... look up under the start menu and see what is being loaded when you turn on you computer .... chances are that you have some applications that have added into you start menu so that they will load quicker when you click on them to start. There are a few other places that you can look to see what is being loaded, but I shouldn't get into that, since it could make you compter stop working if you change too many things incorrectly.

No matter who you speak to. There will be many different answers, that you will have to decide, on which one is best suited to your PC and your habits. Memory could be an issue, if you don't have 512MB, I suggest getting at leat that much. Buy what you can afford, you can't have too much memory! _ Best of Luck

Music and picture files are sometimes large files. By removing them, you will receive more space on your hard drive; however, you can't just stop with removing the files. Once they've been deleted, you should empty your recycle bin and clean your computer up. Once you've removed the files, go to System Tools and click on the Disk Cleanup. It will scan your system & see how much space can be freed up on your pc. Once the disk cleanup has gathered that information, you can go through the list & see what items you want deleted from your system and how many files can be compressed.

After you've run the disk cleanup tool, you should run the disk defragment tool as well. This will take a while, depending on how large a c:/ drive you have, but it's worth it. It will pull your files to the front of the drive and put most of your free space behind most of your files to help your pc read the information to be loaded faster. This helps speed up many pc's. Hope this helps

No it does not slow down your computer. I suggest using DISK DEFRAGMENTER to improve the situation.

But it seems like you think that Windows loads everything on startup, so I am guessing that you have a lot of programs that are in the STARTUP list, and most likely an icon on the bottom right. Then yes, it is those programs (not music files or other DATA files) that are infact slowing the computer down by taking up RAM.

Try and keep the STARTUP list clean. Disable unnecessary programs from STARTUP by either going into the option of the program and disabling it or click on START>RUN then typing MSCONFIG and then ENTER. Look for the STARTUP tab and remove ONLY THE PROGRAMS YOU KNOW. If you do not know what the program is, do not remove it as it may be a critical item.

No, it wont make your comuter faster, Your computer does not load everything on start up. Just your OS and any programs you have designated to load on start up.

Music simply takes up space on your hard drive. With the available space these days, it should not be a concern.

The only thing that uses your system ram is what you are running(have open)

You can speed up your pc by doing a disk defrag and clearing all of your cache and cookies. also you might want to consider buying more ram, not sure what you have available but your system should have at least 512 MB, a gig preferable.

Hope this helps
Happy Holidays

Hi the answer is yes. Usually microsoft windows xp or even older operating systems need at least certain amounts of free space on your hard drive if you have less than 1GB of hard drive space I would suggest uninstalling a few programs or deleting other files. If you have more than 1GB of space then you don't need to because you can use disk defragmenter to make hard drive access files faster - usually around 15%.

If you delete a lot of music files and even pictures, your hard drive will access things a little bit faster. But if you don't want to do that you have another option by defragmenting your hard drive. defragmenting a hard drive can increase your hard drive performance. If you want to defrag your hard disk just click on "start" > "accesories" > "programs" > "system tools" and then "disk defragmenter". It will take a while to defragment your whole hard drive but it will make up to a 15% difference on average on loading up windows and even running programs faster. You can also read more about defragmenting a hard drive there.

Yes deleting unwanted data files from your hard disk improves your computer speed, only if they are stored in the same drive as the operating system drive. That means if your operating system files are stored in the C drive, then if you store songs also in the same drive then it will somewhat slow your computer speed. Also there are some programs that will be always running in your taskbar, they take up some memory and slow down your computer.Deleting song files won't give very good effects. But it will somewhat make the computer faster.Try defragmenting the hard drive. The disk defragmenter is a tool that can be found on
start -> Programs -> Accessories -> system tools -> Disk Defragmenter.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

examine your recycle bin? you may get documents restoration utility. I deleted a partition as quickly as and became in a position to retrieve it, yet provided that it somewhat is unformatted or if thepersistent has no longer been over written. some retrieved archives won't artwork like a number of my photos... a brilliant form of records for some reason... some video clips... all my track became advantageous nonetheless.
