Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ to Christians only. Everyone (most Christians too) else has a tree, lights, Santa's reindeer, stockings, which has nothing to do with the bible

Santa Claus is based off of a real person named St. Nicholas. He gave to the poor and even gave money to this man to help marry off his daughters! Over the years, though, St. Nicholas was sort of transformed by different people into an elfish character. I believe people make more emphasis on santa because they are slowly turning away from Christ. The Christmas story will always survive though.

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas Thoughts

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse
And on goes the story about Christmas Eve
And the jolly old man in whom we believe
Have you even wondered how Santa came to be
So important to Christmas and to you and to me?

Well, it all began a long time ago
The night before Christ to earth was to go

All prepared to make Christ's birth well announced
With angels and music and anthems pronounced
But alas, all had forgotten in the final rush
How to make Christ's birthday remembered to us

The kingdom was searched for the most excellent plan
That would help us remember God's gift to man
A saintly old fellow, so jolly and gay
Came up with the best plan that was offered that day.

He said, "Send a fellow each year at this time
Who would help people be happy and comfort their minds
He could help man remember that God loves us so
By bringing presents to both friend and foe

"He would show by example that true love and joy
Come only when shared with each girl and each boy"
Heaven decided that Santa's plan would be just right
And Santa was asked to play the part that very first night
So from the first Christmas right down to today
When one heard the bells jingling and saw the big sleigh
They knew it was Santa making his way
To remind the world of the love Jesus gave

So, this night before Christmas when you hear Santa come
Remember he's doing it for the love of God's Son
Remember that he teaches as did Christ of old
That to give of one's self is more precious than gold

I give this to my Sunday School students every year as part of their christmas gift!!!

St. Nicholas was a real man. (the original name of Santa Claus). He was a real man born of wealthy parents. They died before he was grown and he gave alway all his wealth; the poor benefitted as did unmarried woman who needed a dowry. When he became a man, his village overwhelming voted him Bishop. He was in the habit of dropping off food and small playthings to the poor at Christ's Mass. Long after his death, he was declared a saint. Worldwide, aside from the 4 apostles in the New Testament, more churches are named after him than any other saint.

From these simple beginnings, grew many variations. Different cultures call him different things as do differing religions. I do not know how "Santa Claus" in our culture began.

Saint Nicholas of Myra is the primary inspiration for the Christian figure of Santa Claus. He was a 4th century Christian bishop of Myra in Lycia, a province of the Byzantine Anatolia, now in Turkey. Nicholas was famous for his generous gifts to the poor, in particular presenting the three impoverished daughters of a pious Christian with dowries so that they would not have to become prostitutes. He was very religious from an early age and devoted his life entirely to Christianity. In Europe (more precisely the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Germany) he is still portrayed as a bearded bishop in canonical robes. The relics of St. Nicholas were transported to Bari in southern Italy by some enterprising Italian merchants; a basilica was constructed in 1087 to house them and the area became a pilgrimage site for the devout. Saint Nicholas became revered by many as the patron saint of seamen, merchants, archers, children, prostitutes, pharmacists, lawyers, pawnbrokers, prisoners, the city of Amsterdam and of Russia. In Greece, Saint Nicholas is sometimes substituted for Saint Basil (Agios Vasilis in Greek), a 4th century AD bishop from Caesarea. Also, a few villages in Flanders, Belgium, celebrate a near identical figure, Sint-Maarten (Saint Martin of Tours)

Santa Claus, it so happens is the second cousin of Jesus Christ. Haven't you ever read your Bible??

Jesus said that he loves the little children and wants them to have toys, and he decided that on his birthday he will treat it as THEIR collective birthday. And he arranged with his second cousin Santa, who was already in the toy business, to deliver them. And Jesus even set up factories, hired elves, and everything that Santa would need. It's all very imaginary and glorious. Praise be to Jesus.

Now the Pagans have come along and pretty much ignored the contribution of Jesus in all this, and I believe that's a travesty. I really really dislike the Pagans. But what can you do.

For all the "other people" that celebrate Christmas. Not that those people are bad or anything, some of them just don't believe, and hey, it's kind of a cool concept.

origins: Saint Nicholas; St. Nicholas
Feast day: December 6th

probably commercialistion decided to combine it with Dec. 25th; easier to promote both in their stores from Nov. 1st or even earlier.

Maybe also, to some extent, Protestantism's de-emphasis on "Saints" and Saints' Days?
