What would make you change the way you typically answer a question?

My type of answer depends on the asker. After a while you know when some people ask silly questions but expect serious answers or ask seemingly serious questions which should not be taken taken to the letter......so to speak .
So my answers - not that I answer much those days anyway - really depends on how much I know the asker.
Yes, I change from goofy answers to serious ones when it is appropriate.
Afterall, it is also part of my make-up. I like joking around but can be serious when the time/question calls for it.

Generally I try to say something I think is amusing. If a question is genuinely thought provoking or the asker seems sincere about wanting a truthful answer, I'll stop being a twerp for a moment and give my actual opinion.

if the asker was someone i know to typically be a really funny person, then i would probably give a funny answer. like a certain kitty in a santa hat.

I'd like to think that I don't have a typical way of answering.
Sometimes I'm sarcastic, sometimes serious, sometimes flippant, analytical, encouraging, scatological.
I don't know if others see it that way, though.

An extremely interesting or compelling question could catch me off guard and have me giving it a legitimate answer. I have been known to suppress the smartass in me and be serious.
