The idea of the subconscious was first formed by Freud in the 1800s, although philosophers and mystics have been debating the idea of a "hidden mind" for centuries. Since this is the psychology section I'm going to assume you want the psychology based answer.

Freud did not have a subconscious mind, but rather the unconscious mind (we are not aware), but many of the subconscious theories are derived from this, so it's important to state Freud's theory.
Freud theorized that the brain is made up of 3 parts; the Id (full conscious), the Ego (mostly conscious), and the Super-Ego (partly conscious). The Id is defined as the primitive instinct, and is driven by our sexual desires. The Ego is what is "socially acceptable," morality, behavior etc, and what we generally live by. The Super-Ego is what balances the two. It finds a way to both satisfies the Id and statisfy the Ego. If this is confusing try to think of it as an iceberg. The tip of the iceberg above the water is the smallest, but what everyone can see; the Ego. The Id is what is mostly under the water trying to push itself up. The super-ego is inbetween supressing the id, and making its why up next to the ego.

When the super-ego is unable to find a way to satisfy this one experiences internal conflict which can lead to defense mechanism (see wikipedia for good definitions), and other psychological disorders.

The unconscious is derived from the 3 parts, but mostly from the Id. Since the Id deals with our primal instinct but is often repressed by the Ego, it forms or "is" our unconscious, our instinctual desires that might not be okay to voice in society. Freud theorized that our dreams are made of our unconscious. Dreams that show something we would not do in reality, or what we think we don't want, is our subconscious telling us that is exactly what we want.

The term "Freudian Slip" also comes from this idea. A Freudian slip is an error in speech or memory that was caused by the unconscious mind. Like saying "I love Mike" when you meant to say "I hate Mike" (b/c all of your friends hate Mike, when you actually like him). So the unconscious shows us our true desires.

Some other psychologist (i.e. Carl Jung, Jacques Lacan) theorize that the unconscious ins divided into 2 parts. 1 being the part we know and live by, the other repressed and uncomfortable memories and experiences.

There isn't any true research on these theories that can really speak on what the subconscious is. Though now with evolutionary psychology and biological studies it seems that the subconscious might be best defined as biological reactions that our mind cannot, or has difficulty controlling. For example, when if you see Mike and are trying not to show affection toward him b/c you "hate" him, your body will still react with this instinctual language.

NOTE: Please do not confuse unconscious with nonconscious (being blacked out, not having consciousness)

It is what is in the back of our mind what we are not seeing from the past. We can even remember past lives in the subconscious mind. The purpose of human life is to come to full consciousness. No necessarily remembering all of our past or past lives, but remembering our constitutional piston as spirit soul, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul. We are not these material bodies, minds, intelligence, race, color, religion, nationality, job etc. These are all temporary designations. We have an eternal relationship with the Supreme Soul also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc. We have to reconnect to actually be happy and return to the eternal spiritual abode where there is no more birth, death old age, or diseases. Issues that lay deep within the mind that people push back into the mind. In dreams at night the subconscious mind can come forth. That is why dream interpretation is so important.

subconscious mind are decisions made without any conscious choice on your part - your heart is kept fuctioning automatically and all the vital functions of digestion, circulation, and breathing are carried on by your subconscious mind through processes independent of your conscious control.Your subconscious mind accepts what is impressed upon it or what you consciously believe. It does not reason things out as your conscious mind does, and does not argue with you controversially.

Yup, decisions made when you're unaware. Some people believe that they can hear voices of their subconscious self. Yeah, its weird. Like having another being living in you.
