yes, they round it off to the nearest number, in your case they rounded it up so it looks better. you will find the same thing with motorcycle and car engines, and all hard drives.

both the above answers are correct. Hard drives are rarely the exact number they are advertised. It is more likely that the HD on your device is somewhere between 78-82 gigs.
The operating system, which is the software on the ipod that lets you listen to music, is taking up the rest of your space on your Hard drive.
I would not worry about it, as if you filled up your hard drive with songs, it would be in the tens of thousands of songs.

It says 74.44 GB because of all the space that is taken up by the programming and text components that Apple has to put on the iPod before they can sell it.

I got the 4GB ipod ages ago, but it really only had 3.7 GB...
not sure why, but the quoted size is probably including the in-built software, which would take up some size... I guess....

It is correct, no defect. A small portion of memory is used for the operating system. Just like a computer. (80 gigs is more memory than many pc's)

That's the way it is! They say its 80GB, but its really only 75GB max. Even on computers! There's nothing wrong with your iPod, its just the way it is.
