I thought this would be easy, I thought wrong...I figured I had an empty port under my cd rom drive, but its covered after you take the plastic cover off with metal, and it doesnt come off...so I figured I would take out my regular cd rom drive, but I cant slide it out of the slot either...Is this even worth my time to mess with and can I used a dvd-r as my only rom drive?

Check to see if both sides of the CD rom drive are unscrewed. Sometimes the inner side has screws which means you have to take the other part of the case off. Once its unscrewed, it'll slide straight out the front. Make sure you make the DVD drive slave, or whatever the CD rom was. (The little white jumper in the back, it should say what to make it in the booklet that came with the DVD drive)

The DVD drive will play CDs. Unless it specifically says it doesn't...(which Ive never seen one...but ive learned that anything is possible with computers. ) Make sure to screw both sides in, make sure the jumper is in correctly, plug it all in, and run it. When the computer comes on, usually it will load drivers for new hard ware, but sometimes you need a CD, which comes with it.

Yes, you can use the new DVD burner as your only drive. But I bet that when you remove the old CD ROM, you will see that the metal bracket can be PRIED OUT. You should see slots in the metal that a screwdriver can fit into. One the other CD ROM drive is out, you should be able to remove that casing.

Here are the advantages of using BOTH drives:
- with less use, the DVD burner will last longer
- it will be easier to duplicate CD ROMS, with the orinal in the CD ROM drive and blank CD-R in the new DVD burner

Good luck and Happy Computing!

On some computers you have to remove the front plastics and remove and install the drives from the front. Some have clips that you have to unlock on the inside, usually three on both sides and the whole front can be removed. You can then remove the metal covering the empty slot.and install the drive.

Are you sure you got all the screws holding in the CD ROM? If it is a newer PC, it may have a latch holding it in.
