There are now many good products out that are especially made for color treated hair. It is extremely important to keep your hair well conditioned to protect from having dry, brittle hair that will leave you with breakage, and split ends. I use "Bio Silk" which is a conditioner that you leave in and can put it in your hair either when wet or dry. It is quite expensive and found in salons, or beauty supply stores, but it lasts for a year because you need only use a very small amount. I have long hair, it goes down about 5 inches past my shoulders, and I use only a nickle size amount. I have found that putting on my hair when wet is best. I tried doing it when dry, but it left it too oily. You simply put a small amount in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together and then rub it all over, starting with the ends which need more conditioning and working upward. It leaves my hair silky, shiny, and soft, and my hair dresser tells me my hair looks healthy and great! Just remember, the shorter your hair, the less product you'll need to use, so if your hair is short, start with only a dime size amount. You don't want to use too much or your hair will be limp and oily.

Don't worry too much about maintaining your coloured hair. You use some brand of hair col or right? Try to use the same brands of shampoo and conditioner, if not for long then at least for 1-2 months . It really helps maintain the colour for longer. Brands like Loreal have Elvive : colour protect shampoo and conditioner, meant specifically for coloured hair.
If your coloured hair look dry, try Levon silky shine.

coloured hair needs care as the chemicals tend to dry your hair. use a shampoo and conditioner made for colored hair. while rinsing out the conditioner always use cold water. hot water damages the hair shafts. also use a hair mask once a week. u can also use a leave-in conditioner, they are helful in repairing dry and damaged hair. also protect your hair from the sunrays. use a headscarf whenever u go out. u can also go for a deep- conditioning treatment in a salon.

After trying all the shampoos and conditioners, I personally use John Frieda's line made for your haircolor. The color stays true much longer and my hair is in wonderful condition. There are shampoos and conditioners for blonds, redheads, and two different ones for brunettes, depending on how dark your hair is.
The most important thing though is to condition your hair regularly, whatever brand you choose.

make sure you take the time each week to deep condition your hair like a vo5 or a deep conditioning treatment under your dryer when you need to use the root color instead of recoloring your entire length of your hair and use a good brand not the cheapy as they seem to cause more damage !

use the conditioner specifically made for colored hair. avoid sun directly on your colored hair. avoid any other chemicals or henna etc. if you are using color.
