do you think that person should still get their "Christmas bonus"? Should they get the free "ham or turkey"? I understand that people have their own beliefs and I respect that, but they still get all the perks...is that right? or should they tell their employer "no thanks" I don't believe in Christmas, therefore I don't think I should accept your gifts or your holiday pay?
Just curious as to what others think about this...hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!!

Merry Christmas to you too. Most companies now, instead of a "Christmas" bonus, give out a "holiday" bonus... and then that should be shared by all, no matter what, if any, their beliefs. Anyone who calls it a "Christmas" only party is truly a scrooge... I work at a law firm and my Jewish boss celebrates Christmas more than my Christian boss. :)

It depends on the person's conscience. Personally I know people both ways. One takes it because she feels it is a bonus and doesn't have to eat it on Xmas. Another declined.
Some employers decide that is when they will do something nice for their employees, so as an employee they can feel it is a bonus. It is nice when they call it a end of the year bonus. Because really that is what it should be. You work just as hard for a company as everyone else. It is a companies way of showing appreciation for what you do. So everyone regardless of religion should be entitled to a perk if it is being offered.

Just because a person doesn't believe in Christmas does not mean that they should turn down a gift.
Turning down a gift can often serve to hurt someone's feelings. When a person gives you a gift, the right response is "thank you."

As to accepting a "Christmas bonus," it's not a bribe. It's not theft. If your employer wishes to give you an extra reward for a job well done, the only Christian response is gratitude. The matter of when Jesus was really born does not give me the right to scorn a gift freely given.

When others celebrate a holiday that you don't believe in, it's only because they simply don't see it how you see it.

I believe that Jesus was born in a different month, and not in december. My family members, however, still do. I refuse to hurt their feelings.
Because there's no prohibition in the new testament as to holidays or birthdays, I see no need to impose one.

This holiday was a very sad one for me. I don't love this holiday any more. I hate it now. But I have no right to be rude to my employer, or co-workers, or my family.

I hate the holiday, I don't hate the givers of gifts, so my answer is thank you.

Are you saying that a person who is not a Christian should not take a bonus given around Christmas time? Regardless of faith a bonus by any other name is still a bonus. I may not believe in Jesus or even observe Christmas but I always take whatever the catholic boss gives out at the end of the year.

Everyone should be included in Christmas celebrations. Especially if your employer offers a bonus or food.

It is the season of giving, thoughtfullness and all should be wished a Merry Christmas. Mostly everyone is off from work and spends the time with family.

I also believe we should honor the "big" holy days of other religions.

Christmas just happens to be a convenient time of year for an employer to say we care and well done, this can be done any time at all andif all staff have contributed to the success of the company then why not get a bonus. No need to call it a Christmas bonus at all just because it happens to be that time of year. We could call it the pagan bonus as thats where christmas is from.

Alternatively, give all who object to the bonus at christmas theirs earlier or later.

In theory, you are right but some companies call it a "Year end" bonus to get around this and that bonus is usually to reward for the efforts and work during the year.

As for the ham well if you're Jewish or Muslim you're not going to take it anyway.

Well, I think that Christmas is just a good time to give those things out. It is a way for your job to say thank you for all that you do, and what better time then the season of giving. So I think it is okay for them to accept the gifts, since they are a way to thank you for your work that you do for the company. It is just conveniently given out around Christmas time. :)

Well of course they should get something... but it wouldn't really be a Christmas bonus without the Christmas.

The gift is being GIVEN by someone TO you. To give a gift is about the giver's traditions. He or she, or, in this case, a business, is giving gifts to celebrate his or her or the business' beliefs. Gift giving is a custom of fellowship. Accept the gifts and appreciate the gesture of fellowship, whatever your beliefs may be about Christmas.
