+ You will be there during the summer so pack appropriately and have something ready for your return home to the cold. NZ will be a little cooler so a jacket might be nice. you can take the opportunity to get a local sweater when you are there so save a little space in your packing for you new stuff. I used to send extra stuff home via the slow mail and it would arrive after I returned. It was kind of like a surprise as I would send some of the purchases from the trip and get to check them out all over again. It was better than declaring at customs and carrying them all over with me. I did that about 1/2 way through. It took a couple of hours to get it all together and mailed but I found the extra space help-full and a lot less to carry.
Good Luck and Have Fun. You should really enjoy the Queensland area. My favorite was Cairnes.

we went to the gold coast in january last year.
it was hot. shorts and flip flops and bathing suit hot.
you might need a sweater if you are in air conditioning.
like in a hotel or restaurant, or at night on the beach.
but it's summer there and very hot. sunscreen is important
because the sun is very strong there. don't go out without
sunscreen. so you might bring long sleeve things or pants that are very thin...to protect from the sun and still be cool.
i did not go to christchurch or queenstown. just brisbane, gold coast, byron bay and cairns. by the way cairns was cooler but still didn't need a sweater.

Since it is still summer at that time, it should be quite warm in all these places. Christchurch and Queenstown may not be too hot but it should be bearable (low 20s maybe).
