My husband and I were just talking about this last night! We decided there's "universal beauty" and "cultural beauty". A person has cultural beauty when they're able to acquire all the things that their culture emulates (the "right" clothes, hair color, jewelry, facial expressions, etc). "Universal beauty" consists of sparkling eyes that make eye contact with the beholder (thus, "beauty in the eyes of the beholder"). "Universal beauty" emanates from people who are open and accepting of what they are experiencing of the world around them.
