Hi, I have a 3 month old son who is refusing his pacifier. Some tell me it is necessary for babies to get used to pacifier and some say it is not. I would like to know whether anyone knows how and when to introduce pacifier to a baby? Thanks.

If he doesn't want it, don't force it. My girls both refused the pacifer, and they are healthy and very smart. I would stop trying if I were you. If you are breast feeding, he is probably getting all he needs from you. Some babies just don't like them. Good Luck.

Don't force it. Some babies don't like pacifiers. I gave my son one when we got home from the hospital, and he's 2 weeks old now, and he loves it. If he doesn't have that, he'll just suck on his fingers or his arm. A pacifier isn't necessary. They do say that it is possible that a baby who goes to sleep with a pacifier may be less likely to be a victim of SIDS, but it's not necessary. Don't worry about it...just like you wouldn't force a bottle into his mouth when he's not hungry, don't force a pacifier into his mouth, when he clearly doesn't want it!

I introduced a pacifier to my daughter when she was newborn. She wasn't a very big fan of it...and she is now 6 months old and still doesn't like a pacifier. If he doesn't want it that is great because you don't have to worry about trying to break him from it or him wanting it while he is 2 or 3 years old and messing his teeth up. So it could be a good thing that he doesn't want it.

My son NEVER used a pacifier or a bottle. I breastfed til 12 months and he went straight to a cup. There really is no need for a pacifier. It's just ONE more thing that you are going to have to break him of when he gets older. If he won't take one now, I'd say that is a GOOD thing!

If your son doesn't want it, don't force it. He may only be 3 months old, but he knows what he does and does not like. I have 2 boys and neither of them ever chose to use a pacifier, my step daughter on the other hand was given one by her mom and it took forever to "break" her from it. Just think of it as once less headache you will have to worry about a couple of years from now.
If you really think your baby is just needing the "suckling" from it, then try a vanilla flavored one, maybe that will help.
Good luck to you!

My 14 month old has never taken a pacifier. The only reason it is "necessary" is for the parent. I would be willing to be that older people told you it is necessary. Usually, they immediately take it. I kept giving it to my son when he cried (even until about 2 months ago). He just carried them (I tried 5 differnt kinds) around. If your son doesn't take one, consider it one thing you don't have to break him of later on. Don't worry.

If your baby won't take the pacifier, consider yourself lucky. There's no NEED for a pacifier, it's intended as a comfort device when a bottle/nipple isn't available. If your baby doesn't like it, great, one less habit you'll have to break later on.

some babies never take to a pacifier, they just don't like it ( my son took it for 1 month and that was it )... it does nothing for them really, does not give food or something to drink ... and potentially gives them dental problems down the road, don't push it if he doesn't want it, and actually it is also better not to get baby "attached to something" then it will be harder to break when he gets older and want him to go to day care / school or what not and they don't encourage kids to have them in school

There is no right or wrong here. Some kids just don't like them; others cannot be without them. You might be better off if he doesn't want a paci because they can be hard to wean off of down the road. But I know there is a place online you can get the paci's that are vanilla flavored. I haven't gotten them in over three years so I forget the site but they do exist.
