There are 2 major losses from a woman's body during menstruation -- iron and water. Both need to replenished adequately and properly to maintain the balance within the system. In particular, the water loss leads to dehydration, resulting in cramps and constipation. Increasing the calories to
more than an optimal level during periods will only heat up
the body even more, and in turn cause more dehydration and
more cramping. In fact, foods which release a lot of calories in
quick bursts, such as sugar, chocolates/sweets and spices,
need to be avoided particularly during periods. Lots of
water -- better-still, butter-milk, as it also carrries good bacteria
that do a lot to improve stomach health and properly control yeast formation -- will do a lot of good during periods. As for
iron loss -- lots of greens/salads (with a little lemon juice, as vitamin C helps in iron adsorption within the body) should work.
Overall, balanced nutrition in small but regular intervals seem
most reasonable, not only during periods, but on any day.

No not really calories. But women do need more iron and zinc when having period because during period they loss blood. Iron and zinc helps to build red blood cells.

Not really. Perhaps more iron to replace the iron lost from the blood.
