It's triangular shape represents the Holy Trinity and it was revered as the tree of God.

In the 7th C. a monk from Crediton in Devonshire, UK., went to Germany to preach God's word. He found ,in a place called Thuringia, many pagans who were worshipping the Oak tree. He converted the people and presumably persuaded them to stop worshipping the Oak and to revere the Fir tree for the reasons above and that is when it became known as God's tree.

It was not decorated at first, but in Central Europe was simply hung up in homes and churches as a symbol of Christianity.

The first recorded decorated Christmas tree was at Riga in Latvia in 1510

In the 16th. C. , Martin Luther is said to have decorated a tree with lights (candles) to amuse his children and to teach them about the twinkling of the stars on a dark night.

Christians. The tradition of the Christmas Tree started in Europe and is first recorded in the 16th century, well into the Christian era. There is no evidence at all of any connection to paganism. NONE WHATSOEVER. All neo-pagan or victorian invention. The first Christmas trees were put up on Christmas Eve and were decorated with fruit and nuts (now replaced by glass baubles and candy). Christmas Eve used to be counted as the Feast of Adam and Eve. The connection is obvious - the Christmas tree represents the tree in the Garden of Eden. The birth of Christ, the second Adam, transforms the tree from a symbol of our fall to a symbol of our redemption.

ok.. I found an activity about Christmas traditions on the internet. According to this elementary reading/ comprehension activity, Martin Luther (lutheranism) was walking through the woods, and spotted a tree that was illuminated in beauty with the starlight. So in order to share this sight with his family, he brought a fur tree in his home and decorated it with candles.... however... in ancient Rome, people deocrated with evergreens in December. This represented life during a time when everything was dying.
