I am sure you are talking of India. In legal terms yes, in relative terms no. In legal terms we have govt of the People by the People for the People. But in relative terms hardly 30% go for voting how can it be democratic? You have more Q it seems just shoot them.

Firstly we need to understand the meaning of a democracy and its principles.

Indian democracy is 10% correct but other 90% is totally wrong so India cannot call itself the Worlds biggest democracy.

All the politicians use THUG or Gunda power, bribes are most comman.

In every Country that calls itself a democracy has an elected Prime Minister and not a remote controlled appointee.

Indian politics are full of Corrupt officials and ministers.

what a silly question, of course India is a democracy
do we have a military dictator like our err, western neighbour? do we curb the rights of the media like the BIG DADDY in the north? do we have fake elections and coups?
india is the largest democracy in the world, and we have come a long way in giving meaning to the line "We, the People"
"The more time you spend [in India], the more you realise one fundamental truth: democracy is important" - Thomas L Freidman, Foreign Affairs analyst, NY Times
also, a democracy need not be a republic. in a democracy, leaders are chosen by, for and of the people. in a republic, only the Supreme Head (the President) is chosen by the country. India is a Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic [Preamble]
so next time u ask such a question, rememeber that in some countries up north, sites like bbcnews.com are blocked, and such questions about government functioning can land u in prison

I have a sister in law that tried to get food to her 4 year old brother in a near by concentration camp. He starved to death despite her best efforts.
I had a co-worker that lost his father to torture during the civil war in El Salvidor.
I had a coworker who's brother lost a foot from a roadside bomb in Iraq as a penalty for being a college student.
This country is not perfect but there is no way you can say we are not democratic. You have been living in a sheltered neighborhood for too long. If you knew what was out there, ther is no way you would say this is not democratic.

If you mean India, the Answer is yes. Because we elect the MPs and MLAs to rule us. But the present system is so faulty we are always ruled by representatives elected by less percentage of voters.

Example. Say there are 100 voters to elect one representative, only 60 voters go to poll. Out of that one gets 25 votes and other get 35 votes thus the person with 35 votes gets elected. In other words 65 voters have not elected the representative. This system will never be representative Democracy.

Yes, it is a democracy... democratic socialism is its basis... that gives liberty to the autocratic politicians to impose emergency in the country and cease all the democratic rights of the people... by the people... and for the people…

The majority of voters, whose votes elect the ministers, are not adequately literate to cast votes to suitable candidates. Some times even criminals, anti social elements and worthless people get elected to the legislature and parliament and eventually outnumber the genuine leaders of the masses…

No, more and more we are turning communist, because we elect democraps. Look at the values of both communism, and democrat, and see there is little difference. Liberals want social welfare, ie: government controlled healthcare, where people will lose control of when and whom they can go to a doctor, a choose their own doctor, and LOSE a RIGHT to choose. This makes people dependant on the government, something American's should never do! We the People, are in control, and should remain so.
Once we lose ONE right, the other's will fall from us quicker than a blink of a eye. I hope that day will never come, but it looks worse and worse everyday a liberal is voted into office.

Other than Communists, who else will appoint their prime mister without any votes, Indian Prime Minister was appointed by a political head of a party, not by masses, so how can that be democratic .
