A motor runs off 3 basic principles:
-Air
-Fuel
-Electricity

Narrow down your options, you know know its getting air. That leaves you Fuel and Electrcity. Check your spark, could be a bad coil, cap, or rotor.

Fuel, could be a bad fuel pump, 96-99 Chevy Vortec's are know to have fuel pump problems. My Tahoe's pump died at 60k and it cranked and cranked, but didnt fire. Dealer charges $700+ for a new fuel pump installed. Shop around. Cloged fuel filter/lines. Throttle body plugged, somehow.

Im a betting man and knowing Chevy's I put my money on the fuel pump. Chevy fuel pumps are loud when you put the key in and turn the ignition you should hear the fuel pump, buzzing...Thats normal. If you dont hear it. Its a dead pump.

if the fuel pump has never been replaced yet then its time to do that no matter what, 140k is alot of miles on a factory original pump and the most common symptom of a bad one is no or difficult start
have the fuel pressure tested, or just drop the tank and replace the pump real quick it takes a couple hours for most ppl to do it

good luck
