i got an ipod and itunes gift certificate so i want to redeem it but when i punched in my code it says network connection timed out- what do i do to buy my songs

Get the latest version of Itunes software and install that right over the older version you have.

My guess is what happened to your card is that the clerk never registered the card when she swiped it,or the card that was in the box with the ipod is expired and it was only a temporary free song card. I would take it back to the store and ask for a new one and tell them that the one you got does not work.
I hope you saved your receipt.
If anything ,try tomorrow ,maybe the network connection is busy today with everyone on at once.
