When it is plugged into the computer ignore the ipod screen. The ipod screen will always say that when your ipod is plugged into the USB port charging. What you have to do is, make sure your music library is not loading any music, or downloading podcasts into your ipod. If you are using iTunes on the left hand of the screen is an ipod icon, with a downward arrow next to it. Click that arrow. This will unmount the ipod form your PC. Or you can find your Ipod icon on your desktop/my computer depending on your operation system and right click it and click on unmount ipod. now your ipod is safe to unplug.

Any iPod
Solution
Listen to or touch iPod to see if its hard drive is spinning.
If the hard drive is not spinning, you can safely disconnect iPod from your computer.
Reset iPod as described in technical document 61705, "iPod: How to Reset". Note: When you reset iPod all your music and data are saved.
If the hard drive is spinning, quit iTunes then re-open it. See if iPod appears in the Source list. If so, eject iPod and disconnect it from the computer. If the hard drive continues to spin while displaying the "do not disconnect" message, disconnect it and reset it as described above.
