Why didn't Mussolini enlist the help of Germany in Africa Campaign in the initial operation?

Pure arrogance, he once boasted to his generals, "I need a thousand Italian dead to sit at the conference table." He wanted his own "empire" and fancied himself a modern day caesar. He was nothing but a rump dictator from a rump state, riding on the coat tails of the Nazis....

You must understand about Mussolini. He needed no help in anything. His ego was bigger then Mel Gibson's. But keep in mind, he attacked such dangerous places as Ethiopia. Oh my how scary. To ask for help would have made him appear weak, to himself anyway.

He also needed help in conquering Greece....The Italians got their butt kicked so Hitler had to call in his troops.
