By the way, is there really an underground dungeon in that opera house?

sad to say, the Phantom is not a real individual and never really was, unless there is history that is unknown to the world that inspired the original work. It is easy to believe in something like that as the story was so honest in its beginnings.

As far as the dungeons under the Opera House, that is another story. Most of medievil area Europe do contain either underground passages or tunnels for water movement. It is possible that that Opera House specifically has something simular beneath it, however I would dare say it is not as large as the story makes it out to be. Should there be tunnels and such, they are barely the height of walkable man and not a lake of mysticism and smoke.

Many men and women take refuge in these tunnels and areas underground at various parts of the year due to climate and social upheaval....ie becoming homeless. But it takes a city engineer to know where everything is, since they were created a very long time ago and are not entirely safe in some places.

No I am afraid not, it was a book written by 'Gaston Leroux' in 1910, a French writer that passed away in 1927.

An exceptional story that spawned many movies and several stage plays and musicals (the most successful being the production by Andrew Lloyd Webber).
