I think the British were so economically and militarily exhausted by WW2 that they concluded holding onto India would be too much trouble, and they wished to avoid similar negative headlines in the international media as happened in the Irish War of Independence 1919-21. Field Marshall Montgomery is supposed to have said that they had to avoid "another Ireland".

A bit of both I think. The sheer financial cost of the second world war finished the British Empire, after Germany & Japan we had the "next worst result" so to speak.

But Ghandis non-violent opposition to British rule helped. Public opinion in England was sympathetic to it, and the British General who ordered his troops to shoot several hundred peaceful protesters was disgraced.

They really did pretty good during WWII, the Magician in their ranks gave the Germans a run for their money with Illusions, special effect props.
