In the control panel, open the "Sounds" applet.

locate the "sounds" tab, select one of the sounds then click on the play button (the one with the small black right arrow), if you can hear the sound, then the soundcard is installed properly, if not, the problem is either with the sound card, or its driver. (2 notes so far: 1) yes, soundcard can get damaged by software you installed. and 2) the starting up process can generate sound through the PC-Speaker, which cannot just play mp3s!!!!!)

if your soundcard is installed properly (if you could hear the sound in the prev. step), start looking for something like: 1) currupted mp3 file, currupted software, or 3) a simple mistake such as low volume in the player (rather than in the main volume console of Windows).

Good Luck ;)

Did you goi nto Control Panel and check the settings there and also make sure that some way your speakers haven't gotten set to the wrong type? Once in a while my Surround Sound speakers will get set back to Desktop Stereo and they will be real low as just two of them are working. Not sure why this happens but I just check all thoise setting now if anything happens.

You might have a failing audio card sorry but failing cards can only be replaced not fixed.
