A runabout - automatic.
A family car - automatic.
A tourer - automatic with paddle shift option.
Your own pride and joy - manual.

Nothing beats a manual if the car is exclusively yours and you enjoy driving, otherwise the hassle gets in the way.

Hopefully this question will be moot in a few years time, once all cars have a sufficiently advanced paddle shift. Then you can have the best of both worlds. The option is only NEARLY perfect in the best expensive cars now.

I say it depends on the car. Sporty car-manual. Family type sedan-automatic. Then there is your location to consider also. Manuals can be down right annoying in NYC type traffic. Also consider what you do in car. If you are the type that eats in your car, talks on the phone alot etc.. You can forget about the manual. My 2 cents. Hope this helps.
