Books by Tamora Pierce and Bruce Coville are good.

Some other great books are:
-Stargirl
-Holes
-Bridge to Terabithia
-Eragon (this is slightly longer than the others)
-Artemis Fowl Series
-Hatchet

Those are the only ones I can find right now. Enjoy!

I like the Series of Unfortunate Results books. Other good choices would be Whales on Stilts by M. T. Anderson. and anything by Bruce Coville.

and my all time favorite book growing up?

Bridge to Teribithia. Don't know who wrote it, but I do know that they're making a movie out of it.
