Absolutely free Downloads of Music/Songs has become rare over the past couple of years, ever since Napster and Kaaza were forced to charge customers for downloads.
The only really FREE downloads are through the P to P sites like Limewire, Bearshare and Aver. In these, other music lovers like you lend or share their songs with you - which cannot be classified as illegal.
You can free download the Softwares of these sites via Google. Then the only hassle is that the particular song you are wanting may not be available at all at any of the uploading participants. At times it will take very long to get hold of that song.
My experience with all the three are good - after all I am getting my music totally free.
A very good alternative - but you have to pay a little bit - is the Russian site ALLTUNES. It charges just 1/7th of the iTunes rates - 12 to 15 cents for a song. The site is first class, well laid out and you can even request them for a particular song if they do not have it.

I know the Limewire and Bearshare are free. You just have to download their software so you can search for music.

www.singingfish.com is good...but yeah Limewire is packed with spyware and virsuses so be careful of it...if u just wanna listen 2 songs while surfin the net go to www.imeem.com

But i warned u limewire does have a lot of viruses so all your downloading time will go waste
u can also go to www.torrentz.com to download songs for free using torrents
