Santa Clause came from Saint Nicholas who was a Bishop in Anatolia (I assume prior to the Turkish conquest). Among deeds was saving several young women from prostitution by leaving bags of gold for them to have doweries and raising a couple of murdered boys from the dead. Thus he is called Saint Nicholas the wonder worker. His feast day fell in the christmas season so he was incorperated into the holiday. Santa Clause comes from Sinterklaas which is how his name was said in Holland. The coca-cola/Clement Moore stuff has already been covered here, so I won't go into it.

Santa was a saint called Nicolas
he was a good man , And he knew that a man had 3 daughters and wanted money because he was poor , so st.nicolas came at night and put some money and knock the door then hide behind a tree , the poor man opened the door and he found the money , he tried to find who put it but he couldn't , then he thanked god .
This repeated many times with many people then suddenly this poor man caught St.Nicolas putting money on his door again .

Santa Claus or as they say Old St. Nick, was actually a real person. He is a Saint of the Orthodox Christian Church. His real name is Saint Nicholas of Myra the Wonderworker. He is celebrated in the Church on December 6th. He was a bishop in the 3rd century. His remains, or relics, as they are called in the Church, are in Bari, Italy, having been stolen by Italian sailors.

Apparently Macys and CocaCola... (with help from German illustrators... as mentioned above)

from the Salon.com article... (full link below)

There is no Santa Claus. Not in the poem now known as "The Night Before Christmas" published anonymously in 1823 and credited to Clement Clarke Moore, whose verses feature a weirdly elvish figure named St. Nicholas. Not in Charles Dickens' 1842 "Christmas Carol," with all its sanctimonious sermonizing about Tiny Tim and the true meaning of Christmas. For all practical purposes, there is no Santa Claus before 1862, the year that Rowland H. Macy took the gift-giving gnome known around New York as Sinterklaas (from the Dutch "Sint Nicolaas"), used an Anglicized name, had him impersonated by a reassuringly full-size human, costumed him in a nice, clean cloak, and installed him in the store as a means of snaring more Christmas shoppers.

apparently CocaCola really pushed it along with its advertising in the thirties...

not sure, but I know Coca-Cola invented the idea of the red & white suit.... I also know that Santa Clause is Dutch for Saint Nicholas (who happened to be some Turkish General, which at the end of his days became a preist or a monk of some sort and gave food and toys to needy children)

Santa is a turditon that comes from the day that Christ was born, so everyone decided to spend it celebrating for the kids by spending time with family and giving gifts then it turned into a thing were this guy would travel to the kids houses to make the kids feel happy and excited about the day that Christ was born.

This was in the newspaper yesterday, and Santa was 'discovered' in Turkey! (surprised me, too!)

And the American Santa Claus - the large, fat jolly old elf - that we see today was invented by Coca-Cola!
