Firstly you have to make sure you remove the trash with ANY food in it every night. Clean out all the interiors of your cabinets and use plastic bags to store your food. If you have a leak or any moisture/dampness problems have them taken care of right away. Roaches multiply rapidly and are difficult to get rid of since they are carnivores and will eat roach carcasses. They eat just about anything. If you have pets, clean their food dishes daily and lay newspaper under the dishes so it's easy to clean up after them.
Never leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight. Sweep and mop the floors daily if necessary until they are under control. There are roach bait traps that are available at any drug store or supermarket. There are roach sprays that can be used in cracks and crevices but may be a problem for people with respiratory conditions.
Empty your kitchen cabinets, seal all open containers in ziploc bags, clean all the shelves, clean under the sink and check for moisture problems and correct any that you find.
The same holds true for your bathroom; clean it out and check for moisture and leaks and have them corrected. It should be easy; just ask for advice at your hardware store.
Purchase caulk and seal any cracks around your baseboards or where the walls meet or under your sinks around the drain pipe. There is caulk available that is paintable so don't worry about ruining your decor.
Buy rubber gloves to do the work. If you can afford it, buy liners for your kitchen shelving. If you have asthma or respiratory problems, purchase a face mask at the hardware store while you clean.
Hope this helps. After doing a thorough cleaning, call an exterminator if you have to, especially if you live in an apartment building. Roaches have been around for 300 million years. They are tough to get rid of. It may take time, but stick to it.
I hope this info helps.
The poster above also gives good advice. Aromatics like clove and oregano annoy them as well. Put some in a paper bag for easy cleanup and place them around dark damp areas and in corners.

Please do not feel offended but roaches love dirt and water. (bathroom and kitchen is their favorite place). Change your habits by keeping your house clean and organize otherwise you will get re-infested. Keep in mind that each roach has at least 25 babies so get rid of the problem for once and for all. Seal all cracks you see under sinks etc... with caulking, dispose of garbage daily, no dirty dishes or dirty stove, than bomb your apartment. Lastly buy roaches motels the ones that kill the eggs as well and change those every 3 months. Bottom line: Starve roaches and make it very unfriendly environment (super clean). Good Luck!

Here's the story of, if you see one, there's ten more in the walls waiting.
I would suggest you call in a good exterminator. They have a three month program they do. They will lead you through it but, you will get a guarantee to be roach free when they're through.

first, you need to get rid of anything they could eat, and wipe up all water. next, mix boric acid with cornmeal, put a teaspoon full in some jar lids and put some around your kitchen, the roaches will eat it or walk in it and die

you got German roaches. They are hard to get rid of. Buy roach bait , and boric acid and sprinkle under refrigerator and behind the stove/oven, and under the drawers and in sink drawer.
