it doesnt make you a weirdo although, people will look at you differently than if you were dining with someone. I always feel weird myself when I have to eat alone. Try eating out less until you come for comfortable with the looks you will get. Also, dont let it bother you. If you go to the same place often, be sure to tip the 15% and always try to get the same server. This will help with the looks because she/he will know your a good tipper and they will be extra nice to you and they will lay off the weird looks.

I would just smile at the waiter/waitress because who knows, one day one of them might just become a friend. People judge only when they are ignorant, and in this case, they don't know what you've been through. Once you've made a friend in a particular favourite restaurant, you'll feel at ease dining at that place.

No, I used to and enjoy eating alone. As I can choose any foods I want, any restaurant I like. If you yourself find it weird to eat alone, you will feel many waiters/watiresses are giving you a mocking look. Actually, you are just another customer to them.

I do it all the time. The waitress are just angry they won't get a bigger tip. Try to frequent more diners, blue collar places, where you can eat at the lunch counter, if it bothers you. (or)
Tell the hostess you want a table for two, and the lady is to meet you here. If you play it off right, you can get the waitress' #, and maybe not have to eat alone anymore.

Hey it doesn't make you look bad at all ,,,,, As for the hired help they are there to tend to your needs or wants ,,,, They aren't being paid or tipped to express their opinions in any way shape for form ,,,,,,, If they make you nervous or uneasy then show them your displeasure and leave them exactly 9 cents for a tip ,,,,, The next time leave them nothing and ever time after that for as long as you go there and experience an attitude problem with the hired help ,,,, You don't have to take their crap and I'm sure you didn't ask them for it ,,,, They are being totally out of line with this and if gets to the point where it becomes out and out blatent then complain to the management ,,,,, Good luck ,,, Enjoy your new freedom ,,,,,,

As a single person, I enjoy not having to cook and eat out in restaurants. I don't care what looks people give me, I'm there to eat and enjoy the meal. Hell I'll even take a book or newspaper with me. I'm paying for my meal and will sit there as long as I like.
ItIt doesn't make you a wierdo, it makes you a customer that the sstaff needs to show respect to.

Perhaps you're being self conscious. Why would waiters and waitresses give you that mocking look? They should be busy serving their customers. It could be all in your head. Move on.

I know how you feel, I try to avoid dining alone, though it's not really fair.... if you can manage with the mocking looks, keep on doing it !

I've been dining alone for more years than most people have been married... I found that restaurant staff don't really care if you are alone are not, they care if there will be a tip involved... If you struggle with companionship during a meal, frequent establishments during non-peak hours, you will have less 'couples' to deal with. Take a book, take your time... make your meal something more than a focus that you are alone.
