Last night I started to get a bit of a sore throat which has progressed by this morning to being swollen and red...so much that I can barely swallow or speak. What can I do to help (I'm breastfeeding so most medications are out of the question...) and should I go to the ER on Christmas day or wait until tomorrow?

previous poster is misinformed. breastmilk does not get contaminated from your being sick, nor will OTC meds harm your breastfeeding baby as long as they are taken as directed. they all say on the package to consult your doc before taking if you are preg or breastfeeding, but I've always been told by my doc that most are ok. sounds like you may have strep throat. i wouldn't imagine you's need to go to the ER, wait till tomorrow when your regular doc's office is open and take Advil until then to lessen the pain and swelling. Also its always helped me to gargle hot salt water when I had a sore throat. Merry Christmas and I hope you feel better

If it really is that severe, that it is difficult to swallow, it could be tonsillitis or even a quinsy. Usually you would also have a high fever. I wouldn't hesitate to go to the ER if it is that bad. The doctor can prescribe antibiotics that are safe to take while breastfeeding. Just remember to keep up your fluids. It's especially important for you to stay healthy while you have a young baby. By the way, if the mother has a cold or even a throat infection, her milk is not contaminated, it is safe to continue to feed your baby. In fact, the baby receives beneficial antibodies from the mother.

While there are SOME antibiotics that aren't safe for a breastfeeding mother, there are several that are safe....
I would go to the doctor. You don't want to have to deal with a sick baby too! Being sick and having a sick baby is the worst!

I suggest you go to the doctor asap. I tried to breast feed my older Daughter, but caught a cold, which caused my breast milk to go bad. That was in 1969, and back then the doctor told me that would happen if I got sick or caught a cold. You may have strep throat. My Daughter was not even a month old when I caught the cold. You need to make sure that your breast milk is not contaminated. Be well and Happy Holidays.

Have a glass of hot tea with a little lemon juice and a smal bit of honey. It really works. You may need it frequently but its very safe also.

you can take azithromycin 500mg once a day 30 min before meals for 3 days. combine this with saline warm gargles. if you are that uncomforable i will advise to go to ER immediately. wish you good recovery.
