USB2 is not necessary but it makes data transfer faster than 1.0 Any hard drive that says it is 2.0 is backward compatible for 1.0 but of course the speed will be slower. In other words any external HD should work just fine.

yes and no. If you computer does not have a USB jack then you have the older computer , that is, serial interface. You can buy an External USB jack, especially if you have no room to plug an extra board in, whether it be an old or new computer. With the price of an external drive just a little bit more money and you could buy a cheap desktop for three to five hundred dollars and it would definitely be faster than your computer. And probably get more storage to boot. SO you might not have to buy the external at all.

Yes because external hard-drives connect through USB. So unless you buy a very old one that still uses usb 1.0 you need to upgrade and get a USB card for your computer. Not too expensive for them so you won't have to worry about pricing. 25.00 for a high end one.

you can get a PCI card that has USB 2.0 on it.... but seriously, if your comuter is that old that it doesn't have USB 2.0, you need to consider getting a new computer
