The only places that are open are certain petrol stations and 7/11 spar-type convienence stores.

There are people out there who forget to put petrol in the car before driving off on Xmas day to see Great Aunt Mabel and there are others who buy the kids a toy robot only to find they forgot the batteries or just discovered the last of the gravy granules have been used. It is for this reason and this reason alone, that some places do decide to open for a FEW hours on Christmas Day, but in my experience the best you can hope for is about 10am-3pm unless the place is run by Asians or other non-Christians who don't celebrate anyway and aren't bothered about working. The High Street, such as it is, will be completely deserted.

I hope not. The poor retail workers deserve at least one day free of work, and people should be able to organise their lives so that they don't have to go into a shop for one day.
