Speaking as a college professor who has taught business, computers, and math, let me say that it all depens on what you plan on using Excel for.

There are many people in the business world who use Excel for basically nothing more than adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. So you don't really need lots of advanced math here. However, I do think a basic knowledge of algebra or business math will definitely help you when it comes to creating formulas in Excel.

For example, let's say that my current sales forecast is $670,000. Next year, I want that raised by 35%. Using Microsoft Excel, I want a spreadsheet that will calculate what my next year's sales forecast will be.

I would need a cell to hold the formula for calculating this. But I would also need to know a little business math in order to know how to actually calculate it.

1) Multiply current forecast by the percent increase to get the change amount.

2) Add this change from #1 to the current forecast to get my new one.

So on my Excel spreadsheet, my formula might be something like: =(B2*35%)+B2 or =B2*1.35.

I've found that many of my students didn't have beyond your level of math coming into my beginning Excel class, but yet they did very well. In my opinion, it's better to focus more on learning Excel rather than the math.

Taking a beginning to intermediate level class in Excel would definitely give you enough to master the program. Once you've done that, then you can match the math to what you ultimately plan on using Excel for.

Honestly it would take you a year to master Excel if you took advanced classes.

Although within a few months you should be better then 95% of MS Office user if you try hard. Go to Mr. Excel's forums and they should help.

That is like how long would it take you to master a new language. Some people do so in a matter of weeks versus others who can never accomplish the task. I will you well.

Good Luck!!!
