Your modem may not be setup to understand the dial tones it is hearing.

If you are on Windows XP go to Start - Connect To and select the connection you are using to go the Internet. Click on properties.

On the general tab you should see the modem the connection is using with a tick beside it. Ensure that it is selected in blue and then click on Configure. Their may be options to allow you to set the region you are in.

If not, make a note of the modem you are using (if there are several). Open Control Panel and go to Phone and Modem Options.

Click on the modems tab, then the name of the modem you are using and then properties. Check that the settings are correct for your country (that's on the advanced tab on my modem).

If everything looks fine and all appears to be well and it is just the no dial tone message that is a problem, untick the box that says 'wait for a dial tone before dialling' on the modem tab and see if that resolves the issue.

If you have specific information on the modem then edit your question and I'll try to help more!

Plug the phone wire you had in the laptop into a telephone and see if there really is a dialtone on the line.

The modem in the laptop might be broken also.

Be sure you plugged the phone wire into the RJ11 modem jack and not the RJ45 Ethernet NIC jack. It would fit but it won't work.

Are you sure it is the correct telephone cable? I am only asking because the exact same thing happened to me. What I mean is, some cables look the same but the little plugs are wired up differently.

Just a thought- it IS liable to be something straightforward.

Possibly in the settings? Is there a check box for "dial-up connection" someplace?
