Whilst having many well documented problems within his personal life, James Brown is probably one of the most influential musicians to ever live, contemporary and also against classical figures.
His career has spanned 6 decades. Longer then anyone else of our times (the likes of Madonna, Elton John & John Lennon). He's also has 119 'hit' singles, a figure I don't think will be beaten for a long time.
Such a shame, but he left a large legacy that will continue to have an impact on music for many, many years.

James Brown was a giant. How many other singers charted 119 songs in their careers? He earned the name the GODFATHER OF SOUL and left a great legacy behind.

I would put him in the category of Duke Ellington, Sammy Davis Jr., Jimmi Hendrix, Prince, Michael Jackson, and Hammer as one of the great entertainers of the last 75 years.

I wasn't a fan of his, but he did inspire lots of my favourites (like Michael Jackson) to become who they are today. Which is why I'm only a little bit sad that he is gone.It is christmas, so I'm not gonna dwell on someone's death. I do understand that some of you are fans and probably are mourning. I respect that. Today is christmas and I think James would want us to continue on and celebrate it.
Merry Christmas.

As someone who lived through the 60's and 70's I never did "get" his music, never understood what it was about. but he was hugely influential, that's for sure.

I always saw him more as a "band leader" type figure and some of his bands were really REALLY good. His rhythm sections were incredible. Jack Casady played bass for him at one point, allegedly.

I understand his influence to music, I'll grant him his creds as a legend...but I never really liked him all that much.

His personal life was not a good example, but his style of music and dance was special.
