To believers, Christmas is a cause of great celebration. Therefore to celebrate, there should be merriment, eating dancing drinking, games. The greeting "Merry Christmas" sums this up. We normally wish people a worry free new year with hopes that they have good fortune, hence "Happy New Year".
A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Lots of love to everyone xx

Means the same pretty much. Americans seem to say "merry" more than people in the UK. I prefer Happy Christmas, or a combination of the two...

Ah, a merry Christmas is particularly enhanced by the liberal consumption of booze, which aids the general merriment. A happy Christmas however is a fairly sober one, where you don't fall asleep in front of the Queen's Speech with dribble coming out of your mouth, and you wake on Boxing Day feeling fine.
