Why not do this, take a water sample from the tank, with the current temperature noted, and have the pet store run a complete set of test on the water to see if it compatible with the starfishes living requirements.

are the clown fish able to survive in the same environment as the starfish? second, did you allow sufficient time for the starfish to aclimate to the water by keeping it in a plastic bag and letting it float on the water of the tank before putting it into the tank? if you didn't aclimate the starfish to the water, it probably went into shock. it must also be able to survive in the same chemicals as the clownfish. some fish cannot live in certain chemical balances as other fish. the wrong chemical balance will kill any fish.

Check the water, to what your star fish requires (not your fish). Did you allow it to climate to the same temp of your tank by floating the bag? If everything was right and it just died...well then it just died. Sometimes stress and shock from a move or transport. Sometimes (if it came from Pet-Co) it just wasnt healthy to start with. Best Wishes :)

Clown fish are the most poisonous fish on the planet. Never put anything in with them for God's Sake.

Star Fish is Salt Water and needs the water formulated to what their natural environment is. If the water is off (Ph, salt etc...) it will die.
