This may not work out in India.
For one, we do not have large sized refrigerators like in the U.S. So buying in bulk and storing the items cannot be done. People prefer to buy from the nearby shops things that they require immediately rather than stocking up on things.
Remember Walmart had to close down in Korea just for this reason. Also, the average size of the Indian home is much too small for bulk purchase and storing.
It just won't work out here.

The fear of domestic retailers is not false, in United States Walmart has resulted in closure of many small chains of retailers and moms-pops stores. But what is the reason? Is it only because they are big, and buy in quantity thus sell cheaper? That is not fully true. First of all, the big players like Walmart drive out mediators, in may cases, they provide seeds to the farmers, and promise to buy all the produce at a specific rate before even cultivation. This is win-win situation for farmers as well as these big stores. These stores need to have same quality across the chain of stores, that is why they need to provide there own seeds. For farmers it is good because these stores pay far more than those mediators who make real profit and farmers get a very small piece of cake. Many of these retailers who are crying today, don't sell on bill, thus stealing VAT/Sales/Income taxes, however, these big stores like Walmart cannot do that. Thus government gets more revenue. All the transactions made by these stores are accounted thus neither these stores, nor the other party can steal taxes. When IKEA was opened in the city where I live, they provide employment to 2700 people, and I am not sure how many people got indirect employment. So these stores are not only resulting into job loss, but also job creation. And the another most important thing, after farmers, the end user the consumer is expected to get benefited. I think we live in an era of open market, we should come out of the mentality of 1960s. We should let them come in, and compete. Our retailers will either reduce their profit and sell at cheaper rate, or merge with them, or go out of business. I don't think government should control this.

change is always welcomed. We have successful chains like Adanis in Gujarat and Subeshaka in South. Adani started their chain of department stores some 6 to 7 years back when the concept of buying form a Department stores was at its grassroo level. People accepted them and welcomed the change in buying concept and today Adanis are having 56 department stores across Gujarat, which Reliance is negotating to buy. So I feel India is ready for retail culture.
