is it possible for someone to be addicted to lying, one of my close friends says she is, she lies to everyone to make herself look like a better person, she lies about her age, race, and pretty much everything and she claims she can't help it, is that even possible ?

she doesn't lie about little stuff( for example if she stole something she would tell you she did ) but its like she lies to make herself seem better to be someone she isn't

You can be addicted to just about anything. An addiction is a loss of control. You can lose control to drugs, alcohol, eating, and many other things; even lying.
We often use the phrase 'I can't help it' as an excuse to do something when it is a matter of us 'not trying to help it.' If we paid closer attention and really were interested in 'helping it' we could beat our addictions. This is the only way change is made. A conscious effort.
Hopefully she'll kick that habit. It's a hard one to uphold for when you lie, you have to support your lie with other lies and it just gets too complicated to the point where you stumble and get caught. Then no one can trust you. That's not where she wants to be.
BTW, if you know this about her, it must be difficult for you to deal with at times...
Good luck...

It is impossible. It is that your friend either had a fearful past, or does not accept herself for who she is. Because of so much corruption by what people think and how people should act, in the media and everywhere. A person can be manipulating in thinking that this or that is needing to be in the "in" crowd. Judging is something that someone fears all the time and that people do on a daily bases.
If she claims that she can't help it, that must be a lie also.
This is just my my opinion.

I dated someone like that once and it took me half-way through the relationship to figure out that everything he told me was a lie. It never occurred to me that someone would be lying to me about stuff, especially important things (naive, i know). And yes, I think some people are addicted to lying. It seems to come as naturally to them as breathing. It's called pathological lying.

YES my younger brother lies all the time about the stupidest stuff and it makes everyone around him so mad. I mean we always end up finding out about his lies then it makes it 10 times worse when the truth comes out. Most of the time you cant trust people who lie all the time cause you can never tell when they are being truthful or pulling bull**** on you.

Yes, two of them. One happens to be my mother and the other a co-worker..I dont think my mother has ever told the truth. My co-worker lies so much i dont think she knows shes doing it.. and she actually believes her bullshit! I swear, if you met her you'd know what im talking about. You can tell shes lying cuz it sounds sooo fake...Everything she lies about is to make her look better, she wants to better then everyone else. It's ridiculious, disgusting and annoying. The sad thing is, she say she doesnt like to lie..like what the fawk are you serious?

Wah, i've never met anyone who is addicted to lying. But meeting one should be scary enough as one will not know her true character. Err, if i met someone like her who lies most of the time, i don't think i would like to be around with her much. I would rather spend my precious time with my best friends ... ...

Yes, i was married to a man who lied about everything.
I was neive and trusting. I finally realized that every time his mouth was moving it was either a lie of a manipulation of the truth.
If your friend knows she does this, then there is hope. She should get some counseling. She can change

Your friend is a compulsive liar. She is not a pathological liar, at least not yet, unless there is more you haven't said. There are many websites that deal with lying but some are hoky poky. Your friend needs professional help. Here is a website that might be of help.
