I agree with MV. It is a region of NE Espana that includes Barcelona. The people speak Catalon, that sounds to me like a mixture of French and Castilian. The roadway signage is spelled in Catalon too. I understand that the Catalonians prefer a to be an independent country, similar to the struggle of the Basque people.

Go if you have the opportunity and see the works of Gaudi.

No, it is not separate from Spain. It has however autonomy concerning some political issues, just like the Spanish Basque country. Catalonia seems also proud of its own culture and language so that many people told it's better to talk Catalan than Spanish if you go there.
